our common nature:
An Appalachian Celebration
Yo-Yo Ma partnered with Big Ears to design a week of cultural experiences that lifted the myriad voices of Appalachia – Indigenous, European, Latinx, Black, and beyond – and gathered local artists, scientists, leaders, and community members in an exploration of our common future, with nature as guide.
The culmination of this week-long gathering took place in Knoxville’s World’s Fair Park, where Yo-Yo Ma was joined by special musical guests including Rhiannon Giddens, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile, along with storytellers, poets, puppets, and dancers in a concert experience .

CULTURE IN ACTION:
THE ART OF HEALING
TORONTO
As the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) embarked on a new program under the stewardship of Shkaabe Makwa (“Spirit Bear Helper” Centre for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Wellness), Art of Healing brought together traditional knowledge and medical expertise in the establishment of a culturally safe space to support patients’ mental well-being.
As part of the celebratory launch event, the TSO and CAMH hosted Yo-Yo Ma and Jeremy Dutcher, who created a community space for conversations about culture’s ability to heal, and performed along with members of the Orchestra, Métis mezzo-soprano Rebecca Cuddy, and Mi’kmaq dancer and choreographer from Eskasoni First Nation Sarah Prosper.
